A Brief History of Yaxham Mill
The Yaxham MillThe present Mill Tower was built in 1860 for the owner William Critoph. At a height of 48 feet with 6 stories and four double suttered sails, the Mill Tower was a spectacular sight when tarred and freshly painted. Originally it is thought that there were 3 Mills on the present site. In 1810 a post Mill was built and out houses were also extended as the Mill grew with prosperity.
In 1922 the Yaxham Mill stopped using wind power and converted to steam and later diesel. However due to flagging fortunes the mill machinery was removed in 1940 and the tower became a storehouse. As the years went by, the site was left to the elements and was a far cry from the Mill you see today.
The Yaxham Mill
The current complex was completely renovated from the derelict Mill and outhouses that have stood dormant since 1940, by the owners in 1996. During the restoration the out buildings were converted into the fabulous cottages that you see today.
The former Forge, Bakery, Wagon Store and Stables have been completely refurbished to become delightful rooms and cottages for use as holiday apartments.
The Millers House and Chapel have now become the Restaurant and Bar and also have two well appointed guest rooms situated above.
The Mill Tower itself was left untouched from it's derelict state during the 1996 renovations. The tower was finally renovated in 1999 along with it's extension containing 3 additional rooms. This extension was built on the site of the existing out buildings adjacent to the Mill Tower.
Ray, Delia and Sarah became the proprietors of the Yaxham Mill in December 2006 and are looking forward to utilising their collective experience in the licensed trade to provide Yaxham with a family run restaurant and pub along with a holiday destination that allows all of the guests to truly enjoy the wonders of Norfolk.
